How To Identify Your Target Audience

Intro to Marketing was one of the first courses I enrolled in at KPU and I had no idea what to expect. In class, my professor once taught us to imagine a product or service. Next, he asked us who would buy our product or service. Finally, he asked all of the students to take out a piece of paper and sketch out what kind of person someone in our target audience would look like.

My professor wanted us to give this person a name. He wanted to know what gender they were, their favourite colours and friends – how much money they earned. Most of all, he wanted to know why the person we drew would pay money to receive our product or service.

2. Where do they live?

3. What industry do they work in?

4. How much do they earn?

5. What are their hobbies?

6. How do they get their information?

7. How do they communicate?

8. How do they think?

9. Who is important to them?

10. How can you best reach your target market?

11. What challenges do they face?

12. Can your service or product help them with these challenges?

13. What pushes them to make purchasing decisions?

14. Who had these customers before you?

15. What are their biggest objections to using your service or product?
